Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is an enchanting medieval town, a haven of peace and quiet where you can stroll along narrow, cobbled streets winding around the church (with 2 naves!) and leading to a little secret garden. The medieval town, steeped in history, has retained many elements from the Middle Ages: ramparts, towers, gates, a fortress, a church with two naves and fine 'checkerboard' walls combining flint and blocks of sandstone or limestone. The squares and narrow cobbled streets are ideal for a gentle stroll, along flower-decked streets with corbelled, half-timbered houses, the oldest dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, finishing at a lovely little botanical garden (the "Herbarium") tucked away below the ramparts.
Genuine Belle Epoque carriages drawn by valiant steam locomotives take you to Le Crotoy, Noyelles-sur-Mer, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Cayeux-sur-Mer. Enjoy the quaint charm of Victorian travel during a tour of the seaside resorts.
The train runs alongside brooks lined with willows, past salt and freshwater marshes and fields, revealing the gorgeous greenery of the Somme Bay, and its authentic wilderness. With a whistle of the guard, you travel 80 years back in time.
